Blue Beetle - Official Trailer
Oh boy... Where do I even start with DC Comics' film division? Clearly, it's a bit of a mess at the moment as we transition from the old regime to James Gunn's new(ish) universe, but I'm going to try and hope for the best. I mean, am I fond of what DC has put out? Generally speaking, no. But I am a fan of DC Comics and their characters, so I really want to see them deliver some quality films. Will they with Blue Beetle? Let's see!
Now, look... I like Jaime Reyes as a character, and I think his iteration of Blue Beetle has a ton of potential (as we got to see in Young Justice: Season Two), but I'm not sure if this movie is going to deliver that. The opening of the trailer looked fun and promising - I found the "they don't get out much" family bit especially funny - but other than that, Blue Beetle looks and feels a little generic. It's giving me flashbacks of how I felt toward Venom if I'm being honest. There's an overall cheap feel to this as well. While some shots look terrific (the scarab joining with Jaime and initiating his first transformation), the rest of it looks like a television budget. And, I guess that makes sense. This was, after all, intended to be a direct release to HBO Max (soon to just be MAX), but even then... I don't know. I can't quite put my finger on what isn't connecting with me here, but something seems off.
